An opportunity for SMEs to strengthen energy resilience

The Canton of Vaud, in collaboration with the Department of Energy, has launched a new initiative to support local SMEs as part of the PEIKaudit. This initiative aims to promote the energy resilience of Vaud businesses by implementing the "Shortage Plan" module of the PEIK audit, offering a subsidy of up to 1,000 francs per site.

The shortage plan is part of the Swiss secondary and tertiary sector's energy transition and electricity savings program. It aims to promote a program to reduce electricity consumption in line with the federal requirements of the OSTRAL plan.

Here's how the OSTRAL plan works:

In Switzerland, in the event of an electricity shortage, the government manages the situation through an organization called OSTRAL. This organization has a plan divided into four phases for dealing with electricity shortages.
These phases are like stages:

  1. In the first phase, they check how much electricity is available and how much is being used.
  2. In the second phase, they warn people to save electricity, perhaps offering benefits if they do.
  3. In the third phase, the government gives special powers to the Federal Council to deal with the situation.
  4. In the fourth phase, they begin to apply more drastic measures to solve the problem.

PEIK Audit: What is it?

According to the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), 30% of energy consumption in industry and services comes from medium-sized SMEs.

PEIK is the professional energy audit for SMEs, created and qualified by the Swiss Confederation. It helps you take a targeted approach to energy-saving projects. Thanks to the financial support of Suisse Energie and the French-speaking cantons, you can benefit from a subsidy.

How does the new subsidy work in relation to audit costs?

The subsidy offered by the Canton of Vaud is in addition to the support already provided by the PEIK program, which covers 50% of audit costs up to a maximum of CHF 2,500. Vaud-based companies can now receive up to CHF 1,000 per site from the cantonal authority, up to a maximum of 75% of total support.

What are the eligibility criteria for the new cantonal subsidy?

Companies located in the canton of Vaud that consume more than 0.1 GWh of electricity are eligible for the subsidy. Gas consumers may also apply, with the exception of protected categories. In addition, the PEIK audit eligibility criteria must be met.

If the PEIK audit was carried out less than three years ago, companies can only request the shortage plan. If, on the other hand, the audit was carried out more than three years ago, it is necessary to update the audit before moving on to the shortage plan.

Companies that have already made commitments to the canton concerning a shortage plan are not eligible for this subsidy.
